Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) accounts for up to 4% of patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes, typically characterized by a transient cardiac phenotype of left ventricular dysfunction with spontaneous recovery. In this review article, Mohammed Majid Akhtar and colleagues review the complex pathways underpinning TTS and discuss future research avenues to disentangle the mechanisms causing TTS.
